Late Dr. Keki Hormusji Gharda, a renowned scientist, entrepreneur, and philanthropist, is often called the "Father of the Indian Agro-Chemical Industry." He played a key role in India's Green Revolution by developing import substitutes for essential agrochemicals. His work has challenged global industry giants, offering superior yet affordable products to Indian farmers.
Born in 1929, Dr. Gharda’s academic journey started with a B.Sc. in Chemistry from the University of Bombay, followed by an M.S. and Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Michigan. After teaching abroad, he returned to India in 1958 to teach at UDCT (now ICT), Mumbai. In 1964, he founded Gharda Chemicals in a small shed, creating a world-class R&D facility focused on Pigments, Polymers, and Agrochemicals.
Known for prioritizing practical innovation, Dr. Gharda now focuses on revolutionary methods for metal extraction, including aluminium and titanium. His work on reducing production costs for titanium aims to make it one of the most widely used metals globally.
Dr. Gharda's contributions have earned him numerous accolades, including the Chemical Pioneer Award and multiple Lifetime Achievement Awards. Even in his later years, he continues to spearhead research with the Gharda Scientific Research Foundation, turning knowledge into products that benefit society.
